A little about myself

I studied Piano Tuning, Maintenance and Repair at what is now Newark and Sherwood College between 1982 and 1985, qualifying with City & Guilds parts 1 & 2, and the College Diploma.

I worked for the next four years from a small music shop on the Sussex coast, before returning to my home county of Yorkshire in 1989. Having lived and worked in the Holmfirth area since 1994, I now have the opportunity of also working in Staffordshire, based in Penkridge near Stafford.

I currently tune and repair pianos in both the public and private sectors, working in state and independent schools and colleges, in churches, theatres, halls, and for private individuals.

I had the pleasure of maintaining the pianos in the School of Music of The University of Leeds for thirty years, preparing their Steinways for many international artists. I also tuned for the early rounds of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition, which are now held in the School.

I have tuned for many fine non-classical artists, from Jools Holland to Victoria Wood, and contemporary keyboard bands such as Keane.

My musical interests are wide-ranging. I enjoy making music and play trumpet in an amateur symphony orchestra.

• Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra
  An amateur orchestra I've played with for thirty years, was founded in 1891. It is ‘The Symphony Orchestra of the Colne Valley’ and has a four-concert program each year in Huddersfield Town Hall.
• Paddock Orchestra
  A smaller organisation, based in Huddersfield, which I occasionally play with. They perform around four times a year in smaller venues around the town.
• Leeds University School of Music
  A long-established School of Music, which has its own concert season. Students and professional musicians perform programmes of widely varying styles, including Jazz, World music, and Classical. I've maintained the pianos in the School since 1989, and prepare the pianos for concerts and recitals.
